Gambling Rules in Spain for Newcomers

Spain regulates gambling at national and regional level. A newcomer mainly needs to know the age limit, who the regulator is and how to block themselves if needed.

Who regulates what

Online gambling offered across Spain is regulated nationally under Law 13/2011. The regulator is the Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego, whose official site lists licensed operators. Venues such as casinos, bingo halls and betting shops are regulated by each autonomous community, so local rules differ.

Age

You must be 18 or over to gamble. Expect to be asked for identification, online and in person.

State and charitable games

Alongside private operators there are the state lottery operator and ONCE, the national organisation for blind people, founded in 1938, which funds its work through its own lottery. Its street kiosks are a familiar sight.

Blocking yourself

Spain keeps a national register that lets a person ask to be barred from gambling; the general idea is known as self-exclusion. Registration is free and is made through the regulator.

Limits as a habit

Regulated sites must offer deposit limits. Setting them is sensible wherever you play. For comparison, operators' information sites in other markets describe the same tools; one Traditional Chinese example is this page on setting limits and where to find help (理性娛樂與求助資源).
